This makes it even harder for students to make their way through four or five years of an undergraduate degree. Although some students will be able to pay part or all of their tuition through scholarships or student loans, they will still have to face rising costs of living. Additionally, students who don’t qualify for financial aid or scholarships will be faced with these housing costs on top of their already expensive tuition. Off-campus housing Based on price per square foot, on-campus housing is some of the most expensive real estate in the country. Thats why more and more college students are turning to off-campus housing throughout their college career. Cost of living in general Students who are still in high school are advised to think about the cost of living in the towns and cities surrounding the college campuses to which they are applying. For example, some universities will be located in areas where a student could have their own bedroom and bathroom for $350 a month base rent, plus their total cost of living fees (including food) to total around $600 a month. On the other hand, some areas of the country will offer off-campus student housing at a minimum of $1000 a month (before food and bills). Expenses in each region and state can vary greatly, but this is something that most 18-year-olds are not aware of. Apparently, this person had sent me numerous emails (I was told 15) and I had failed to reply.   Finally, I was texted and emailed (which I received unlike previous emails sent) a hostile note, which completely stunned me because I had never received anything â€" email or text â€" until today.   So here I am, receiving a nasty email/text for what seemed like out of the blue as I had never seen or heard anything prior from this person.   I’m guessing the hostility came from what looked like to this person, being completely ignored. I think there is a good learning point to this.   If you have a critical business to conduct: Call directly to the person you need to communicate with. These days with common courtesy not being very common, it’s hard to tell if you’re being ignored or if technology has failed.   I know that ignoring emails, texts and voicemails are now the new “norm” but I urge you to rise above doing that.   It’s not courteous and it’s rude.   Responding doesn’t take that long. Also, I’ve had enough emails not get through to people that I know there is a failure rate that’s not insignificant.   If people aren’t responding to you in either mode, don’t assume you’re being ignored â€" call and speak to the person.   Again, I realize that those things get ignored but once you do connect you can easily communicate whatever is your agenda. Hostility won’t make you feel better and like my story â€" is completely uncalled for.   This behavior didn’t win points with me.   If a call had been made 15 emails ago, it would have saved frustrations and insult for the other person and maybe a keeping me as a business associate. Moral of the story:   If it’s important â€" don’t email or text make a call. Introvert Whisperer / Feeling Inauthentic in Your Extraverted Workplace Adapt! It’s Really Not So Bad - Introvert Whisperer Feeling Inauthentic in Your Extraverted Workplace? Adapt! It’s Really Not So Bad This is a counterpoint article. I recently read someone’s post that made me cringe for so many reasons I feel compelled to make my opinion known. The basic message was that they were ticked off because they were an Introvert and forced to adapt their behavior in the workplace. They felt they shouldn’t have to do this, but that everyone else should adapt to their personality. This isn’t a direct paraphrase, but it was the message. Here’s what’s wrong with this message: Being Ticked Off About Being an Introvert Nothing good can come from being ticked off about the hand nature has dealt you. There are whole ethnic groups out there who are given the shaft along with fat people, people with disabilities, women and the elderly. I have fought some type of bias my whole career, and today is no different. Oh well. Get over it and be the best version of you. Being a fantastic professional is the best way to wage a war against stupid people who discount you because of who you are. Their loss. You don’t make yourself feel better by harboring a bad attitude, and you’re doing nothing to convince the world to change their opinion. Life is inherently unfair, and our job is to maximize the assets we have while minimizing the lesser-valued qualities. Think of this like a photographer showing the best side of you in a picture. It’s still authentically who you are; it’s just the best side. Work with what you have and what you have is probably seriously great. You Must Adapt As Charles Darwin (the father of evolution theory) put it: “Adapting and changing is central to the human existence.” Said another way: “Change or die,” as coined by Dr. James Prochaska. Adapting wasn’t my idea it was an acknowledgement by a bunch of really brainy people (who are also Introverts). Were in a constant state of change and adaptation, even if we don’t know it. You don’t stay the same, and nothing else does, either.To think you shouldn’t adapt your way of doing things is perhaps one of the stupidest things I’ve heard in a long time. Of course you need to adapt. You adapt all the time. You don’t interact with a child the same way you do an adult. You don’t interact with management the same way you do a friend. We constantly adapt to people and situations to ensure our encounters go well. It doesn’t make us fake or inauthentic; it makes us warm and likeable. The people who are best at adapting to various situations at work are the ones who will be the most successful. It’s called Emotional Intelligence. It’s being able to “read” the people and the situation and then calling upon your soft skills to optimize the outcome for all involved. People who don’t adapt are difficult to work with and are seriously no fun to be around. Theyre rigid and frustrating because the world revolves around them (as far as they’re concerned) and how they want things done. To think you shouldn’t have to adapt because you’re an Introvert and that the world around you should adapt to your personality is self-centered at best and at its worst is simply crippling. The world is not going to adapt to you. Not only that, but that very thinking is counter-intuitive. You’re saying you shouldn’t have to adapt, but other people should adapt to you. Are you listening to what you’re saying? One big lesson I picked up while becoming a certified Myers-Briggs instructor was that personality type never changes, despite some people thinking that it does. What does change is how versatile a person becomes in accessing other personality characteristics over their lifetime in other words, adapting. If you’ve ever heard a person say they used to be “very Introverted” but now they’re “more Extraverted, means they picked up the skill of adapting driven by the situations they encountered. That is also true for the other three personality preferences as identified by Myers-Briggs. Be Smart in How You Adapt It turns out you don’t have to wait for enough experience in life and work to develop your skills for adapting. You can accelerate the development of those skills. It requires a recipe of: 1. Consciousness toward what you want to change, and 2. The specific behavior to change to If the dyspeptic person who said they were done adapting was so uncomfortable with the behaviors they were pursuing, they did it wrong. I have learned that, just like there are different learning styles, there are also different styles for how you do things. Life is not a “one-size-fits-all, which in this case means we don’t all have to do things the same way. (Click here to tweet this thought.) Most of the typical advice, especially for soft skills, is inherently oriented toward our more Extraverted culture and ways of doing things. If thats what you try to start doing, most likely you will feel uncomfortable and inauthentic, too. If the motto “just do it” worked, as an example, for Introverts doing networking, then we would all be rockstar networkers. We aren’t. If we Introverts could “just do it” with networking, we would already be doing it. Yes, there is an approach Introverts can use that takes into account our strengths and involves a slightly different process. You get the same result strengthened relationships. You just use a different route to get to the same destination. This is called adapting. In other words, being smart about how or what you adapt your behaviors to is first about defining what end result you’re looking to achieve, then using a process that will get that result you can feel comfortable doing. Keeping with the example of networking, if my goal is to expand and strengthen the circle of people I know, does that mean I have to go to multiple networking events per week and work the room? Absolutely not! I can use coffee dates to strengthen existing relationships (only one example of things I could do), and I can ask my friends to bring a friend I haven’t met, which will expand my networking circle. You see, as an Introvert, we do form relationships. We just prefer to form them in a small, intimate scale like this. Different route, same end results, and I didn’t have to creep myself out by working the room. Let me end this commentary by saying this: If you don’t like how your career is turning out, don’t be cranky about it change what you’re doing. The Maker of the Masterpieces of Greek SculptureOne of the earliest named figures in the history of sculpture is Phidias, an Ancient Greek, from Athens, who designed and constructed some of the most important works in the classical period.He is known for having created the statue of Zeus at Olympia â€" one of the wonders of the ancient world â€" as well as a number of colossal statues of Athena, at the Acropolis, at the Parthenon, and the Propylaea.All of these, unfortunately, are now lost. But this doesn’t detract from his importance. Throughout the ancient world, Phidias’s name was known, and he is known for guiding the direction of future Greek sculptural design.Conveniently, in the fifties, we found the workshop of Phidias â€" and from this could confirm that all of these masterpieces of sculpture did indeed exist.Learn more about the world's most famous sculptures here! Phidias contributed to the work of some of most marvelous works of ancient GreeceDonato di Niccolò di Betto Bardi (1386-1466), or Donatello. The Founder of the Italian Renaissance in SculptureWe’re going to call him Donatello. One of the greatest â€" and most influential â€" sculptors in history, he turned the attention of Italian sculptors at the time back to the classicist principles of ancient Greece and Rome. With that, he kickstarted the renaissance in sculpture that was to change the course of the history of art.His most famous work is probably the Bronze David â€" one of the early Renaissance statues in the round â€" which depicts a boyish biblical David with a sword. Otherwise, the bronze statue of Gattamelata in Padova is considered one of his masterpieces.Whilst his works themselves are not exceptionally famous for those outsides of the art world, his work was hugely, indisputably, influential.Learn everything about sculpture!Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564). The Heig ht of the High RenaissanceWe usually associate the Italian Renaissance with Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, and Donatello. The fourth name in this last â€" and the last of the Ninja Turtles â€" is Michelangelo, whose own sculpture of David is perhaps the most famous sculpture ever.It’s incredible really that someone can be just so damn talented, but Michelangelo excelled at pretty much everything he laid his hand to. Alongside sculpture, there’s the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel â€" which probably goes down as the most breath-taking work of painting ever produced.Anyway, he was also hugely influential on the cultural landscape around him and following him. His Statue of Victory was massively influential on the Mannerist style that followed, whilst the marble sculpture of Moses and others at the tomb of Julius II still have an influence over contemporary sculpture today. A Baroque Sculptural Legend.For the arts, between the fourteenth and eighteenth centuries, the home was Italy, where artists were developing the naturalistic, representational, and expressive potential of different materials.Gian Lorenzo Bernini, following in the footsteps of the great sculptors of the Renaissance would only develop further their achievements, moving the history of art into the Baroque. Indeed, it is thought that he wanted to prove himself, in the art of sculpture, a worthy successor to Michelangelo.His most famous works include the Ecstasy of Santa Teresa, The Rape of Proserpina, and Apollo and Daphne. Yet, he didn’t stop with mere sculpture.Bernini was also an architect and town planner, and it is impossible to go to Rome and miss the massive influence that he had on the city.Find some good art classes here. Bernini continued the spirit of the Italian RenaissanceAntonio Canova (1757-1822). Hero of Neo-Classical Sculpture.After Bernini’s Baroque â€" and subsequently the rococo style that took the dynamism and decoration of this style to a greater extreme â€" sculptors calmed down a little. They returned to the classical values of Greek and Roman sculpture.This meant simplicity, nobility, and naturalism â€" and Antonio Canova was probably the most successful in capturing these values.His most famous works are Psyche Revived by Cupid’s Kiss, Perseus Triumphant, and The Three Graces. And, yes, he was Italian too â€" and lived in Venice his whole life. Canova is known for his neoclassical styleAuguste Rodin (1840-1917). The Birth of Modernist Sculpture.Rodin was one of those artists who was the continuous recipient of criticism throughout his life. Rejected by academic art school, and generally not accepted by his peers, his work was generally seen as quite unconventional.However, this struggle is one of the great testaments to his originality. These days, he is considered to be the father of modernism â€" the general description of the concerns of art at the beginning of the twentieth century.Rather than focusing on classical mythology, allegory, or religious themes and narratives, Rodin’s work was more impressionistic, more focused on the individual subject, and less polished in its finish. He took the statue’s pose off its pedestal and opened the door to the more subversive and innovative works that would follow.See his work in one of the best sculpture collections in the world.Constantin Brancusi (1876-1957). A Major Influe nce on Modern Sculpture.Incidentally, the Romanian Constantin Brancusi was one of Rodin’s students. However, like Samuel Beckett with James Joyce, he found the instruction by such a genius quite stifling.Brancusi left Rodin’s studio and made a career of his own in sculpture, developing an immediately recognisable style. Generally considered abstract in his work, Brancusi sculptural style moves away from the figurative sculpture that preceded him. Instead, he focused on simplicity of shape and form.The Kiss, or the Sleeping Muse, are probably his two most famous works, whilst the Endless Column is perhaps the most famous of twentieth-century outdoor sculpture.Pablo Picasso (1881-1973). The Famous Painter and Sculptor.Picasso is one of the most famous names in the history of art â€" and most people would be able to recognise one of his works. He has an incredibly distinct style, which came to be known as Cubism.Whilst known primarily for his painting, Picasso was almost as prolifi c in sculpture â€" and maintained this style across the different media.He is also known for pioneering the art form known as the assemblage â€" something like a three-dimensional collage usually made up of found objects.Robert Smithson (1938-1973). Making Sculpture from the Land.In the twentieth century, the limits of what artists could do â€" and what they could define as sculpture â€" burst open. It was a century of committed artistic innovation which brought with it a proliferation of styles, media, and themes.One of the most radical innovators in twentieth-century sculpture was Robert Smithson. His work focused on making art out of the land, manipulating land to make it artful.His most famous work is probably the Spiral Jetty, constructed in the Great Salt Lake in Utah, US.
